There is not much that we enjoy more than capturing our journey with photos and videos. As active blogger and YouTuber we need appropriate equipment and bought a bunch of technical devices for that.
In this blogpost we present you the technology we are carrying with us.
To create and edit blogposts, photos and videos you first of all need a laptop. Also to publish content a laptop is your best choice. We decided to take an Apple MacBook Air 13“ with us while traveling. The MacBook Air is particularly suitable as it only weighs 1,35 kg. As a backpacker you have to pay attention to every gram you take with you. Furthermore, we find the handling and operation of Mac OS products way easier than Windows computers.
We mainly use our smartphones to be active on every social media channel. We use them to post our photos on Instagram and to keep track about what other world travelers do. You can also plan and publish Facebook posts pretty easily. You always have your phone with you and can react to comments etc. immediately.
To guarantee high quality videos, you should take a suitable camera with you to vlog. We chose the Panasonic Lumix FZ200. We also take most of our photos with the Lumix. Certainly the camera is quite heavy, but it has a good price-performance ratio. There are much more compact cameras, but they can easily cost three times as much. Additionally, we use a mini tripod, which makes the handling of the camera much easier.
For action-packed shots as well as underwater photos and videos, we brought a GoPro Hero4 Black on our travels. Certainly there is already a GoPro Hero5 available, but we are absolutely satisfied with the shots of the Hero4. The GoPro Hero4 Black is a bit cheaper than the Hero5. One big advantage of the Hero5 over the Hero4 is that it is waterproof even without a case, what makes the sound way better. As we use our Lumix to record sounds anyways, that is no problem for us. We also use the GoPro Handle, which makes the camera float, in case you loose it by accident while swimming.
Our ultimate favorite camera is definitely the DJI Mavic Pro. This compact drone fits in every backpack thanks to the foldable „wings“. The shots we took already are simply amazing. They upgrade every video! Breathtaking photos can also be taken with this (or any other) drone easy as a pie. We chose the Fly More Combo. This package includes two additional batteries and other gadgets. Unfortunately, the DJI Mavic Pro is not very cheap. But there is also cheaper drones you can buy, whose quality we cannot judge.
If you plan to produce videos, you will have hours of material really fast. Those videos have an insane volume and you can’t and should not save all of them on your laptop. Therefore we also took an external harddrive with 1 TB capacity with us. All videos are safe and don’t slow down your computer.
Tip: When you want to be really safe, you can buy a vibration proof external harddrive. External harddrives are extremely vulnerable to vibrations and can easily get damaged. We are ok with a normal one, as we always keep it in our hand luggage. And vibration proof devices are much more expensive.
Tip 2: For boring evenings you can exchange movies with other backpackers and safe them on your external harddrive.
For us the travel outlet by Acrato is indispensable. It has the shape of a cube and has four European outlets as well as two USB outlets integrated. Therefore you can charge six technical devices at once! Changeable adapters for almost every country are included as well. Definitely one of our favorites for the world trip.
If you want to blog and vlog on your journey, you need suitable technology. Those devices will probably be the major when it comes to the weight of your luggage. A laptop, a smartphone, a camera and an outlet are must haves.
Drone, GoPro and an external harddrives are extras you don’t necessarily need. You can easily spend thousands of euros for all the equipment, but there are alternatives for every budget.
