For working in Australia within your Working Holidays, you will need an Australian Tax File Number (TFN). Unfortunately you cannot apply for it from another country in advance. But as soon as you arrive in Australia, you can easily apply online within just 5 minutes. We tell you how it works!
You can apply for the TFN on the website of the Australian Taxation Office.
What you need:
You are traveling on a working holiday visa (subclass 417)?
Then your next step will be to go on this website. Click on Apply online for a TFN.
On the next two pages you can read some information and confirm with Next.
State your passport number and the correspondent country. State as well, if you have ever visited Australia before.
The next step is more or less self-explanatory, because it is about you! Tell them your full name (family name, first name, other given names). Are you married and assumed the name of your spouse, then put your current name on top. You have to state your birth name below “Are you, or have you been, known by any other names?”. State your birth date and your gender. If you are married, you also have to tell them the name of your spouse.
In the next step, you will be asked, if you have ever applied for a TFN or ABN (Australian Business Number) before. It is very likely that you haven’t. If you never had a TFN or ABN before, you can also answer with no to the following questions. However, in case you did, fill in the desired information.
On the next page you need to state your Australian postal address. Your TFN will be sent to this address. Therefore you should be sure that you will stay there for the next 7-14 days OR that you know someone, who can accept the letter and forward it to you. So just fill in the address of your hostel, hotel, AirBnB flat etc.
Your current home address is your official residence.
In case of any query, you have to fill in your contact details. It is sufficient, if you just fill out one box, e.g. your e mail address or your phone number.
Done! You only need to click on submit and your application for your Australian Tax File Number has been put in. Now you’ll have to wait… our TFN arrived after approximately 10 days.
